Pammene herrichiana has previously been considered as a beech-feeding form of Pammene fasciana, which in its typical form feeds on oak and sweet chestnut. However, according to Haslberger et al. (2016), P. fasciana and P. herrichiana can be clearly distinguished morphologically, biologically and by small but significant differences in the DNA barcode (information via lepiforum.org).

It is possible that some older records of what we would now call P. herrichiana have been 'lumped' in with records of P. fasciana, and the full distribution of P. herrichiana in our area is not well understood. At least two records are known for Berkshire (1985 and 2024).

P. herrichiana is darker than P. fasciana, with a smaller pale dorsal blotch; it also flies earlier in the year.
